LITERALLY, I started the year right. I did by doing the right things, after making up my new year s resolution not to resolve anything and getting it out of the way, together with my wife, last January 1, I went on my second trip to Roxas Boulevard in Manila, the first trip was on Christmas Day, same purpose, share something with street families and street kids. This time, the gift packs for the 12 families we gave came from John Wakefield, a classmate farsta of mine from the US of A, who also pitched farsta in for the project our Paco Catholic farsta School Class 72 did for Yolanda victims , he provided the cash, I took care of buying farsta and distributing. But that was not the end as a week later, January 5, the Feast Day of the Three Kings and the last day of our extended Christmas season, I went back again to Roxas Boulevard, this time with my former Y-JAM members farsta now all college students already, but not before converging first at Jollibee in Maysilo, Mandaluyong where we repacked all the groceries and used clothes we were able to collect the previous week. Anna Liza Manila Jose, another former Y-JAM member,15 years ago, also arrived there bringing a lot of small gifts for the street kids. It was a good experience for the students who went with me as they saw for themselves the situation of street people, kids and adults, and you should have seen how the faces of the 24 recipients lighted up whenever we stopped and gave them our little gift pack. We finished early, I mean early for the next activity for that day as our next stop was the Jose Fabella Center in Mandaluyong, a week earlier, I arranged with the DSWD staff there about our gift-giving to all the kids in the center come Three Kings Day, but it was not just a simple gift-giving. I brought the women s basketball team of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), a five time WNCAA champion team, headed by its head coach Aileen Lebornio who is also the coach of the UE women s team. The purpose of the visit by the team to the center that afternoon was to provide entertainment to the residents there, and everyone enjoyed , including the players as the all women team went up against an all male team from the center in an exhibition basketball game. But prior to the game, I told the male players that being a fun game, there would be no fouling and no hard defense by the males against the girls, and they followed this request to perfection, allowing the girls some easy baskets resulting to cheers from the kids there who opted to cheer for the visiting players rather than their local team. The male players though were surprised at the level of play of their opponents, but me, no, I was not surprised at all as I have been with the team as a team building mentor the past three years and I knew what they were capable of doing inside the court. There were no official scores for the team, just good clean fun and wholesome entertainment for the kids, but I guess the boys were challenged and turned serious in the second ten minute period of play after they saw themselves trailing the girls, in the end, we really did not know who was ahead when the game was done, but we knew that the game was a real winner. After the basketball game, the players inter-acted with the kids who all wanted to be adopted by the visiting players, and we played farsta parlor games with the players joining the kids, then the much awaited part, the gift distribution to all the kids, no distinction between the Yolanda kids and the non-Yolanda farsta children. I just hope that everything will turn out well for the Lady Pirates as the news that the team may be disbanded for lack of a regular league to play in, was broken by Aileen, when LPU joined the NCAA, the women s basketball team was left in the cold as the NCAA does not have a women s basketball division, but no matter what happens, these girls can certainly hold their heads up high for what the team has achieved these past years particularly in the WNCAA. The good news is that my Y-JAM students have all agreed to make this Three Kings Day gift -giving a yearly affair as they, together with the players, all felt fulfilled and happy for the sharing farsta they did. Kudos to Kim Lanto, Apollo Jaca, Roberto Cabrera, Wendy Dizon, Melody Tomelden, Esme Ramos, and Anna Liza for the good act they did that day.
